Save the Day – The Chalk Paint Way!
Chalk paint is a favorite of many renovators as a way to quickly give a facelift to tired furniture and home accents. The challenge is always: color. There are limits to the color selection available. Not anymore!
Loving Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and finding it produces great results, the struggle remains with a slim 29 color options. For many of us, that’s not enough. NOW, color can rise to your decorating mojo. Welcome, BB Frösch Chalk Paint!
BB Frösch is a totally different type of product. It’s a powder that can be mixed with ANY color paint (preferably flat).
In the above image, you’ll see the supplies for a BB Frösch project. Most of these are available through their website. A starter kit is for sale to make your first project manageable. There are also training classes (for a fee) if you’re nervous to tackle this on your own.
Time for a chalk paint test run
Ideally your first project isn’t something precious, such as this old shelving unit. While the lines and functionality are great, it’s not an heirloom by any stretch of the imagination. Making this piece the perfect one, or so in theory, to test out the BB Frösch product line.
After picking up a quart of flat paint, it is a bit messy to mix the powder, water, and paint but not a road block. Just prepare for a little bit to clean up. This is a negative having used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint with virtually no mess at all.
The mixing is easy. If you need more paint, it’s not hard to mix up more. Note: this shelving unit was rather challenging to paint due to the rounded posts (which is the feature that sparked its original purchase.
The brushes are a special product available through BB Frösch. The needles do fall out, although they can be pick off the painted surface easily. They are also NOT easy to clean.
That said, as you can see below, the pretty NOW-pink book shelf looks perfect in the exactly right shade for the space. This isn’t possible with any other kind of chalk paint product. Check out the before and after.
why chalk paint?
After painting the entire surface with the pretty pink chalk paint, it was waxing time per instructions. This doesn’t take long and makes the surface much more pleasing to touch as it’s otherwise kind of gritty.
That sounds like a lot of work BUT it’s not, especially when comparing to stripping and sanding like with normal paint. Chalk paint is a favorite of many DIY furniture restorers because the process doesn’t involve stripping, sanding, and priming. That saves SOOO much time.
The finish is NOT satin or glossy as it would be if you used another product. Instead it’s more toward the shabby chic direction (not in a dated way). The colors are warm and cozy. Strawberry milkshake is our new name as a chalk paint mix.
ready to test your chalk paint super powers?
If you like the idea of testing out the BB Frösch Chalk Paint but not sure what to do first? Start small! A metal tin, a wooden board, an accent shelf or side table. Again, nothing that will break your heart if your first attempt isn’t perfect.
BB Frösch is useful on a ton of surfaces. Next week, you’ll see a pink tin coming out of our studio. Can you tell that PINK is the color of the present?
Enjoy and keep creating! Remember, if you ever need help with a project, just reach out!
