Opening a card with a pretty envelope liner instantly feels more expensive and fancy. DIY envelope liners are super easy to make and NOT expensive. They’re an extra touch that makes a big difference to even the most simple card or note. You can give an elegant touch to all of your correspondence without taking a huge amount of time or breaking the bank on expensive stationery.
This week I made a birthday card for my daughter. Since she’s
in college, I direct shipped her gift but I want her to have a note arrive on
her actual birthday since I won’t be there to celebrate with her.
I had an extra A7 (5×7) envelope so that’s the size card I made. The card is a pretty simple design so I decided that it needed the extra touch of a liner. This is how I made a DIY envelope liner. You can use the same method for ANY size envelope and it only takes a few minutes!
Supplies for making your own DIY envelope liner
You don’t need a lot for this project. Most of these items you probably already have at home.
Start with a see-through ruler. I have two and I use them constantly so this is a good buy regardless of how often you’ll be making DIY envelope liners.
While you can use the see-through ruler for cutting, I like to use my quilting square. They come in all different sizes so you might want to get a couple to have on hand for various projects.
You’ll also need a rotary cutter, although scissors will work too! Be sure to have one for fabric and another for paper. Don’t mix them up as the paper will dull the blade for the fabric.
You’ll need adhesive of some sort. If you’re going to do a lot of paper crafts then I recommend getting a tape gun. This will save you a ton of time.
Finally you’ll need a pencil, a piece of thin cardboard or heavy cardstock, an envelope, and some wrapping paper. I’ll leave those up to you go gather together.
A suggestion, keep a stock of packing materials such as small boxes and cardboard that you receive and are in good shape. They’re great for craft projects.

You’ll always want your diy envelope liners
Now that you know how easy it is to DIY envelope liners you’ll never go back. Keep your eyes peeled for pretty wrapping papers with smaller scale graphics that will make great liners.
If you enjoy making your own cards, try to use the same size all the time. Then you only need to make a stencil once and you’ll be good to go each time you need a new liner.
